WEEK 15

WEBSITE AS AN EXHIBITION SPACE

Sketches for Website Process

Curation + Experience

I referenced the layout for my website like this image that represents how the latent space looks like if it was to be two-dimensional. I can use this as a way to classify images into one container and group them up to present as one work.

List of experiments include: First, Quantify Images. Second, Segmenting Images. Third, Quantifying Movement. Fourth, Stitching Frames. These are the curated works that I have compiled for the websites. Each present a different perspective that look into how our digital memories are represented and make sense for the machine.

I created the sketch on Adobe Illustrator first to imagine what it would look like if it were to be presented to a website. Then, I asked ChatGPT to code a javascript function for the boxes to be positioned randomly inside one grid-container (to avoid the boxes overflowing and as well to seperate these 4 different tasks together).

Initially, I started with three columns, and it looks like its too crowded. Hence, I decided to add the last experiment into the website to make it into 4 container (2x2). So when people scroll they can only see work 1 and work 2 side by side. I believe that this makes the visual much better as well.

For the boxes customization part, I was inspired by Faris Kassim's website on "Remember to not Forget" where he downsized the image up to the point that it blurs out. I decided to do that for each and one of the cover image for the boxes. So when you hover, it will reveal the original image unblurred. I used sqoosh as a tool to downsized all of the image into 10x10 pixels to achieve that blurry effects.

Final Delievarables

HUMAN-MACHINE MEMORY

The final outcome is a web space that I created for my experiments where people can view these works in a more engaging experience. As users visit the website, there will be an introduction that describes the project. The boxes will be in random positioned everytime the page is refreshed.

For each work that I curated, they are accompanied with small boxes that leads to one of the outcomes as an experiment. Each work has different outcome, ranging from texts to images to videos. The straight lines on the background acts as a boundaries to divide the 4 works that I have curated.

Documentation

Table Set-up

Although most of my works are digital, I decided to print out some stuff to make my table more alive. I tried my best to craft the description by adding foamboard for depth, and acrylic for clean look.

Final Reflections

Overall, I am half happy and half not satisfied with the outcome. There are some things I could improve of, and some times I could make use of but I couldn't manage my time well. The next step for my project is building a participatory experience.

As I mentioned multiple times in my past reflections, what my project needed was an input from other people. As most of the experiments I have done involve only me between the machine, it might be hard for people to understand the project in future scenario.

Ending the first semester of year 3, I still felt proud that I had put these much efforts into the project. If only I had been more managable in my time, maybe I could have done better. However, this could be something that I can reflect on for the next semester. During the break, I am planning to do as much experiments that I can, while also keep on refining my dissertation to not fall back when I came back for semester two.
